Team Bell goes through league undefeated; Team Yoni causes major upset

March 9, 2012

As it turned it, no one could stop Team Bell going through undefeated in the Dingos Premier League. In a huge upset last night, Team Yoni came from nowhere to give  Team Duggan a nice little touch up and claim their first win.Team Bell will play Team Duggan in the 2012 Indoor Grand Final next week, while Team Yoni  will try and settle a score with Team Mckay in the Div.II final.

Team Yoni was pitted against Team Duggan first up last night. The script, based on past weeks, was meant to go something like, “Team Duggan wins by 20 odd points; Team Yoni loses all three matches”. But it wasn’t the case. Team Yoni bolted out of the blocks and came out  all guns blazing from the first bounce and caused an absolute boil over. A 6.3(39) to 1.1(7) first quarter help set up the 38-pt win, their first for the league. While the next three quarters were tight, Team Yoni held on to win each quarter, with  P.Tinkler causing damage up forward bagging seven majors.

In the other game, Team Bell took on Team McKay in a scrappy low-scoring affair. One would have thought this game was played in a boggy marsh, not an indoor turf dome. At halftime, scores read Bell 2.8(20) – 0.5 (5) McKay. Both sides added just one goal each in the third term, but Team Bell lifted a gear in the last, kicking three majors to Team McKay’s two, to run out winners by 21-pts. The captain, T.Bell, got plenty of it and lead from the front all night while bagging a few goals as well.

With all the preliminary rounds completed, it was great to see all teams win at least one game.

Next Week Finals: DIV I: TEAM BELL vs TEAM DUGGAN / DIV.II TEAM YONI vs TEAM MCKAY

Here’s the final standings after three rounds.

Pts W L D PF PA %
1 BELL 12 3 0 182 140 130
2 DUGGAN 4 1 2 185 183 101
3 YONI 4 1 2 183 182 100.5
4 MCKAY 4 1 2 106 151 70.1

Team Bell went undefeated through the league and are crowned minor premiers (well done guys!)  winning three games by 6-pts, 15-pts and last night by 21-pts. A very consistent effort across all games. Without blowing teams away, they always knew when to step it up.

The only thing separating Team Duggan and Team Yoni on the ladder  is 0.5 per cent.  Team Yoni will be cursing their round one effort in front of goals, which may have cost them a GF berth. Team Yoni took a while to get going in the league and by game three looked like a completely different outfit — but too much effort, too late in the season. Meanwhile, Team Duggan had the biggest win of the league, crushing Team McKay by 46-pts last week and only narrowly losing to Team Bell by 6-pts in round one, which makes it tough to call  for next week’s Grand Final.

And what happened to Team McKay? A promising start ended in tears. And a wooden spoon. They had a 22-pt win first up. They were sitting on top of the ladder too. Then an 8-goal hiding and a 21-pt defeat by the minor premiers. A very inconsistent run. One week they were hot. The next, cold. The skipper and D. Wells put in fine performances in their three games.

So, finals next week. Bell v Duggan should be a cracker in the big one. And Yoni v McKay for bronze will be entertaining to say the least.(Stay tuned for the finals preview next week)
